What to Expect

WildeDay marks Oscar Wilde’s connection to Enniskillen, where he was a pupil at Portora Royal School. Rather than a single stage event, the festival scatters around twenty short performances across the town over one day, each running fifteen to twenty minutes, staged in local businesses and public spaces. Performers appear in Victorian dress and deliver readings and extracts from Wilde’s works.

The programme spans several disciplines rather than sticking to readings alone, taking in drama, music, dance, literature and visual arts, all built around Wilde’s material. The organisers describe the aim as making that heritage accessible and available to everyone, which is why the whole day is free and takes place where people already are rather than behind a box office. A launch event runs on Friday 16 October, the evening before the main day.

Getting There

Enniskillen’s island town centre is compact and walkable, which is exactly what a festival of short performances scattered across venues needs. Darling Street runs through the middle of it, close to the Buttermarket, Enniskillen Castle and the main shopping streets. Drivers from Dublin and Cavan take the A509 and then the A4, Belfast traffic uses the M1 and A4, and the A32 comes south from Omagh, with either city about ninety minutes away. Town centre car parks and the Tesco car park on the west bank are the practical options on a Saturday. Enniskillen bus station on Wellington Road serves Ulsterbus and Bus Eireann, including the Dublin coach, and is a few minutes’ walk from Darling Street.
