Enniskillen Macular Society Support Group

At Fermanagh House · Broadmeadow Place, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, BT74 7HR

Support group members talking over tea at a community centre

What to Expect

The Enniskillen Macular Society Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month at Fermanagh House, giving people affected by macular disease, and their families, a regular local place to talk to others facing the same condition. Macular disease affects the central part of the retina and is one of the leading causes of sight loss in older adults across Ireland and the UK. A diagnosis usually brings practical worries about driving, reading and independence alongside the medical side, and local groups like this exist because a national information line cannot replace sitting across a table from someone who has already been through it.

The Enniskillen group runs from 11:00am to 1:00pm, a format that leaves room for a proper conversation rather than a rushed talk. Sessions are informal and typically involve members sharing practical experience, from coping strategies and low-vision aids to navigating hospital appointments and benefits, alongside wider updates on treatment and research published nationally by the Macular Society. Everyone affected is welcome, whether newly diagnosed or living with the condition for years, and carers and family members are encouraged to come too. Because the group meets at Fermanagh House, a community hub that also hosts a dementia singing group, an RNID hearing drop-in and other health groups through the week, the setting is familiar and low pressure rather than clinical.

Getting There

Fermanagh House is on Broadmeadow Place in Enniskillen town centre, close to the main shopping streets, with parking beside the building. Drivers reach Enniskillen on the A4 from Belfast, Dungannon and Sligo, or on the A32 from Omagh and Ballinamallard. Enniskillen bus station on Wellington Road is a few minutes’ walk away and is the hub for Ulsterbus services from across Fermanagh, which matters for a group where many members no longer drive.
