Natural Weaving Workshop at Marble Arch Caves

At Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre · 43 Marlbank Road, Florencecourt, Co. Fermanagh, BT92 1EW

A circular loom woven with foraged grasses and seed heads

What to Expect

Artist and Geopark Ambassador Morag leads this two and a half hour weaving workshop at the Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre, opening with a guided forage for natural materials in the grounds around the centre. Participants gather what the season offers, then work it into a circular loom, building a piece of nature-based artwork to take home at the end of the afternoon. Everything needed for the weaving is supplied, and the session is pitched squarely at beginners, so no previous experience with looms or textile craft is expected.

Marble Arch Caves sits inside the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark, which straddles the Fermanagh and Cavan border, and the workshop runs as part of the Geopark’s programme rather than as a standalone craft class. Staff from the caves join the session to talk about the cave system beneath the site and the limestone landscape that shapes what grows above it, so the foraging is framed by the geology as much as by the craft. Numbers are capped and the workshop is suitable for ages twelve and over. The foraging route and the grounds are not wheelchair accessible.

Getting There

Marble Arch Caves is on the Marlbank Road above Florencecourt, roughly 20 minutes’ drive southwest of Enniskillen. Take the A4 out of Enniskillen, pick up the A32 towards Swanlinbar, then follow the brown signs for Marble Arch Caves and Cuilcagh Mountain Park. There is free parking at the visitor centre. There is no scheduled bus service to the caves themselves, so a car or a taxi from Enniskillen is the practical way in, and the last stretch of road is narrow in places.
