Greyhounds racing under lights at Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium

What to Expect

Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium runs live racing on Monday and Thursday evenings at its Show Grounds track on the Ross Road, with a first race at 8:00pm and gates opening an hour beforehand at 7:00pm. It is one of the longest established sporting venues in the county. The stadium opened officially on 3 August 1933, built by a group of eight local businessmen including Denis O’Brien, James McCrea, William Stamp and Tim Larkin, and board membership has stayed largely within those founding families since. Kay Prendergast, O’Brien’s daughter, became Ireland’s first female timekeeper here. The circuit is a wide, galloping track with a pronounced rise from the final bend to the winning line, and cards are run over 350, 525, 550, 575 and 600 yards.

A night here is a straightforward evening’s racing rather than a production: a card of eight to ten races over roughly two hours, tote betting on each, and a bar and food inside the stadium. The track’s feature event is the Red Mills Future Champion Unraced Stake, which pulls entries from around the country, and historic Enniscorthy prizes have included the Grand Prize, the Leinster Puppy Cup and the Wexford Leger. Greyhounds including Mile Bush Pride, Palms Printer and the Monalee dogs began their careers on this track. Race night schedules are set month by month and some months run Thursdays only, so check the Greyhound Racing Ireland fixture listing before travelling.
