In Between Silence at Axis Ballymun

In Between Silence lands at Axis Ballymun for one night on Friday 16 October, pairing more than 130 true personal stories with music composed live in response to each one. It suits anyone drawn to spoken-word and music crossover shows, and readers of Irish writing looking for something more intimate than a straight book event.

What to expect

Composer Stano builds an original piece of music for each storyteller without hearing their story in advance, then performs it live as the story is read or told, so the audience watches the music take shape in real time alongside the words. The story collection draws on contributors including Roddy Doyle, Anne Enright and Aidan Gillen among many lesser-known voices, covering people and events that left a lasting mark on the person telling it. The show is staged cinema-style in Axis Ballymun’s theatre, with the audience settled in to listen rather than watching a conventional set-piece performance, and the format is built to create a shared emotional arc across the evening rather than a series of isolated readings. Expect a quiet, attentive room rather than a chatty gig crowd.

Getting there

Axis Ballymun is on Main Street, Ballymun, Dublin 9, close to the M50/M1 interchange. No Luas or DART line reaches Ballymun, so Dublin Bus is the practical option, with services running along the Ballymun Road corridor into the city centre. On-site and on-street parking is available near the venue.

While you’re in Ballymun

Axis runs a full autumn and winter programme across theatre, music and family shows, so it is worth checking what else is on around the same date while booking. There is more to explore across Co. Dublin.
