At Kilmainham Gaol Museum · Inchicore Road, Kilmainham, Dublin 8
Only the published dates are confirmed for this programme.
Kilmainham Gaol is one of Dublin’s best known historic sites, the former prison where leaders of the 1916 Rising were held and, in most cases, executed. Alongside its regular guided tours, the museum is currently hosting a free exhibition of photographs that were taken secretly inside the gaol in 1921, during the War of Independence, offering a rare prisoner’s eye view of life behind its walls at a pivotal moment in the country’s history.
“The Prisoners’ Lens” gathers photographs smuggled or secretly taken by prisoners held in Kilmainham during 1921, a period when the gaol was again in heavy use for republican prisoners. The images offer a different angle on the site’s history than the standard tour, showing how prisoners documented their own confinement despite the obvious risks of doing so. The exhibition is included in the museum’s normal opening hours and does not require a separate ticket, though access to the gaol itself, including the main cells and exercise yard, is by guided tour only and booking ahead is strongly recommended given how quickly tours sell out.
Kilmainham Gaol is on Inchicore Road, a short walk from the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Richmond Barracks and the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. Dublin Bus routes run along South Circular Road and Emmet Road nearby, and the Luas Red Line stop at Suir Road is within easy walking distance for anyone travelling by tram.
Kilmainham is dense with heritage sites within a few minutes’ walk of each other, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art and Richmond Barracks, so a visit to the gaol fits naturally into a longer day out in the area. For more things to do nearby, see Co. Dublin.
