By The Light of the Silvery Moon brings Aindrias de Staic’s blend of Irish mythology, storytelling and live music to Axis Ballymun on Thursday 19 November at 8pm. It suits anyone with an interest in Ireland’s oral storytelling tradition, traditional music, or an evening out that leans more towards folklore than a straight gig or play.
De Staic revives the seanchai, or traditional Irish storyteller, tradition in a contemporary style, weaving mythology and folklore together with live accompaniment from harpist Aisling Lyons and percussionist Brian Fleming. The show is pitched as a high-energy evening rather than a quiet, reverential retelling of old tales, billed as a night of wonder, laughter, wit and warmth built around Ireland’s living heritage. Expect a mix of spoken storytelling and musical interludes rather than a formal concert or scripted play, with the bardic tradition treated as something still very much alive rather than a museum piece.
Axis Ballymun regularly programmes work that sits between traditional and contemporary Irish culture, and this show is a good example, pairing an old storytelling form with a modern staging and two skilled musicians rather than presenting it as a purely nostalgic exercise. Tickets are €20, with an €18 concession rate available.
