At Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) · Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Military Road, Dublin 8
Only the published dates are confirmed for this programme.
IMMA Collection: Art as Agency is a major three-year display of the museum’s permanent collection, on show in Gallery 1 and running until 6 February 2028. It brings together work by more than 100 artists spanning the 1960s to the present, from established figures such as Marcel Duchamp, Louis le Brocquy and Sean Scully to contemporary practitioners including Andrea Geyer, Ellen Gallagher and Yazan Khalili. The display is curated around the idea of art as a form of agency, addressing themes including gender, hybridity, cultural histories, decolonialism, diaspora, migration, food injustice, climate and ecological change, and includes a white-cube gallery space inspired by Brian O’Doherty’s writing on exhibition spaces.
Because it is a long-term display rather than a temporary show, there is no need to plan around a closing date the way you would for a short run: it is designed to be visited more than once over its three years on view, with different works likely to catch your eye on a second or third trip. Given the scale, more than 100 artists across several decades and mediums, it rewards taking your time rather than trying to see everything in one pass.
IMMA is at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Military Road, Dublin 8. It is accessible by Luas Red Line or by bus services across Dublin.
Kilmainham is also home to Kilmainham Gaol and the Royal Hospital’s own formal gardens and grounds, so there is plenty to combine with a visit, whether that’s a longer day trip out from the city centre or a stop on the way to somewhere else in the south inner city. There is more to see across Co. Dublin.
On display now, running until 6 February 2028
