DRAWDA is Drogheda’s urban art trail, eight large outdoor murals painted on walls and gable ends across the town centre, each depicting a figure from Irish mythology. The current trail includes The Morrígan, Boann, Amergin, Balor and Étaín, and Droichead Arts Centre publishes a separate page on each figure so you can read the story behind the wall you are standing under.
The trail is designed to be walked without a guide. A downloadable map sets the route and a smartphone audio guide narrates each stop, so it works as a free hour or two in the town at any time of year. On Monday 31 August, Droichead runs a day of guided tours, with professional guides leading walkers through the streets and telling the mythological stories as they go. That day’s tours meet at the first mural on the route, The Morrígan on Patrick Street. Given Drogheda’s position at the mouth of the Boyne and the mythology attached to the river valley, the subject matter is closer to home than most public art schemes.
The trail runs through Drogheda town centre, with the starting mural on Patrick Street, close to West Street and the Tholsel. Droichead Arts Centre on Stockwell Street is the place to pick up trail information. Drivers from Dublin, Dundalk or Navan leave the M1 at junction 9 or 10 and follow the town centre signs, with parking at Scotch Hall on the south bank of the Boyne and at the Laurence Shopping Centre. Drogheda MacBride railway station on the Dublin to Belfast line is about 15 minutes on foot, and Bus Éireann and Matthews coaches stop on the Dublin Road and at the Donore Road bus station.
