Buncrana Parkrun

What to Expect

Buncrana parkrun is a free, volunteer-run 5km event held every Saturday morning at 9:30 AM, all year round. It is timed but it is not a race: runners, joggers, walkers and buggy-pushers all start together, and a tail walker follows the last participant home so nobody finishes alone. The event has now passed its 300th running, which makes it one of the longest-established weekly community gatherings in Inishowen.

The course starts and finishes at the Tip O’Neill monument, next to the children’s play park on the Buncrana shorefront, and follows the coastal path alongside Lough Swilly. It is flat, surfaced and exposed to the water, so the wind off the lough is usually the only difficulty. Volunteers marshal the turnaround points and results are posted online later the same day. Volunteering is as welcome as running, and the roster is filled a week or two ahead through the event’s own page.

• Print or save your barcode and bring it, no barcode means no time

• Walkers are welcome and a tail walker stays at the back of the field

Getting There

Buncrana is on the R238 on the western shore of the Inishowen peninsula, about 25 minutes from Derry via Bridgend and 35 minutes from Letterkenny on the N13 and R238. Aileach Road runs along the shorefront on the Swilly side of the town, and the monument is easy to spot beside the play park. There is free on-street parking along the shorefront and further parking in the town centre, a five-minute walk away. Bus Eireann and Local Link services run from Letterkenny and Derry into Buncrana, though early Saturday departures are limited, so check the timetable the night before.
