What to Expect

Donegal Mela is a theatre takeover rather than a stage show. For four hours on Saturday 22 August 2026, the Indian Community Centre Letterkenny and Donegal County Council fill An Grianán Theatre with food, live performance and hands-on activity, and every part of it is free to walk into. The word mela means a gathering or fair in South Asian usage, and the event is run on that basis: come and go as you like, eat, watch, join in.

The afternoon covers henna tattooing, children’s games, live performances, craft stalls, multicultural food and a community art exhibition. The organisers describe it as hands-on creative experience for families and individuals of all ages, with the wider aim of celebrating cultural diversity and supporting community wellbeing through arts that people can actually reach. It is programmed jointly by the Indian Community Centre Letterkenny and the county council, and draws a mixed crowd from across the town and the wider county.

Getting There

An Grianán Theatre is on the Port Road in Letterkenny, a five-minute walk from the town centre and close to the bus station, which makes this one of the easier events in Donegal to reach without a car. Bus Eireann and Local Link services run into Letterkenny from Derry, Sligo, Dublin, Buncrana and Dungloe. Town-centre car parks and on-street parking sit within a few minutes’ walk of the theatre, and the Port Road entrance is level with the footpath.
