Chess Club at Carndonagh Community Library

What to Expect

Carndonagh Community Library runs its chess club on Saturday 15 August 2026 from 11am to 1pm, in the library at the Public Services Centre in the town. It is a free, drop in session run by the Donegal County Council Library Service, and the two hour slot leaves room for a few full games rather than a quick demonstration. Players of any standard are catered for, and beginners can learn on the day.

The same Saturday is a busy one across the Inishowen and south Donegal branches. Carndonagh also hosts a Summer Stars treasure hunt from 11am to 11.30am, so families can pair the two. Buncrana Library on St Mary’s Road runs both a Summer Stars treasure hunt and a Summer Stars chess session from 11am to 12pm, and Bundoran Library on Station Road runs Summer Stars arts and crafts from 11am to 1pm. Summer Stars is the library service’s annual summer reading and activity programme for children, which winds up in August before the Wainfest children’s festival takes over in October.

Getting There

Carndonagh is the main town of central Inishowen, on the R238 about 30km north of Buncrana and 40km from Derry via Muff and Quigley’s Point. The Public Services Centre is on the edge of the town centre with parking on site, and the Diamond and the main shops are a short walk away. Local Link Donegal runs Inishowen services into Carndonagh from Buncrana, Malin, Culdaff and Moville, and Letterkenny is about an hour away by road via Manorcunningham and Bridgend.
