Ralph McTell, the veteran English folk singer-songwriter best known for his song Streets of London, plays The Everyman in Cork on Sunday 1 November.
McTell has been a central figure in the British and Irish folk revival scene since the 1960s and 70s, and his live shows tend to be intimate, largely solo or lightly accompanied acoustic guitar performances, mixing his best-known songs with stories and material from across a long career. The Everyman’s restored Victorian theatre, with its warm acoustics and close seating, is well suited to this kind of songwriter show, letting the audience focus on the lyrics and playing rather than a big production. It’s a show that will appeal strongly to longtime folk fans as well as anyone who grew up with Streets of London on the radio, and a Sunday evening slot fits the reflective, storytelling nature of his performances.
The Everyman is at 15 MacCurtain Street, on the northside of Cork city centre, a short walk from Kent railway station and the city’s main bridges over the River Lee.
MacCurtain Street is on Cork’s northside, a short walk over the river from Patrick Street and the city centre, and an uphill walk from the Shandon Bells at St Anne’s Church, where visitors can ring the bells by hand. The area has its own run of bars and restaurants, making it easy to combine the show with dinner beforehand. See our Cork page for more on the city.
