To Hell in a Handbag: The Secret Lives of Canon Chasuble and Miss Prism plays at glor in Ennis on Wednesday 23 September 2026 at 8:00 PM. Written and performed by Helen Norton and Jonathan White, it takes the two minor clerical characters from Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and tells the story of the play from their side of the stage. What emerges is a parallel plot of blackmail, embezzlement and mistaken identity running underneath the familiar one.
The piece runs 60 minutes with no interval. It has toured Ireland and the UK repeatedly since it first appeared, and the Ennis date falls within its tenth anniversary tour. The Mail on Sunday called it “beautifully written and acted” and the Irish Times noted that it “packs extraordinary amounts of plot and top-notch gags”. Knowing Wilde’s original helps, but the show is written to work without it.
glor is on Causeway Link at the northern end of Ennis town centre, a few minutes’ walk from O’Connell Square. By car, come off the M18 at an Ennis exit and follow the N85 or the town signage for the arts centre. There is parking on Causeway Link itself and in the town centre car parks nearby, and a Wednesday evening is usually a straightforward one for parking in Ennis. Ennis bus station and rail station share a site on Station Road, about a fifteen-minute walk from the venue. Bus Eireann runs services from Limerick, Galway, Shannon Airport, Kilrush and Ennistymon, and Irish Rail serves Ennis on the Limerick to Galway line. Last services from Ennis are early in the evening, so check return times before booking if you are travelling from outside the county.
