Siamsa Tire, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland based in Tralee, bring The Cable to glor in Ennis on Thursday 22 October 2026 at 8:00 PM. It is a one-person drama written and performed by Mike Kelly and directed by Aidan Dooley, and it runs 130 minutes including an interval, making it the longest theatre date in glor’s autumn programme.
The play sets a family story against the laying of the Transatlantic Cable at Valentia Island in County Kerry in 1866, the moment that first put Europe and North America in direct contact within minutes rather than weeks. Kelly moves between personal narrative and that larger history, working through loss, connection and change as a household’s difficulties run alongside a world remaking how it communicates. The staging uses recorded original Irish music, live musical accompaniment and a strong lighting design rather than a built set. It is recommended for ages 12 and over.
glor is on Causeway Link on the northern side of Ennis town centre, a short walk from O’Connell Square. Drivers should come off the M18 at an Ennis exit and follow the N85 or the local signage for the arts centre; there is parking on Causeway Link and in the town centre car parks nearby. Ennis bus station and rail station sit together on Station Road, about fifteen minutes on foot, with Bus Eireann services from Limerick, Galway, Shannon Airport, Kilrush and Ennistymon, and Irish Rail on the Limerick to Galway line. Because the show finishes late, anyone relying on public transport should confirm the last departure before booking; taxis normally wait near O’Connell Square after evening performances.
