What to Expect

Memories of Colour is Caroline Wilson’s first solo exhibition at Culturlann Sweeney in Kilkee, on show from 7 September to 3 October 2026. It is presented in partnership with Clare Arts Office, admission is free, and the gallery is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Wilson is a self-taught painter based in Kilrush, working across oil, acrylic, charcoal and encaustic, the wax-based technique that lets a painting hold texture and depth in layers. The pictures come from places she visited as a child and returned to as an adult, so the show is as much about recall as about the landscape itself. She paints Irish weather as directly as she paints Irish ground, with a strong colour palette rather than a muted one, and she works to bring a sense of sound as well as sight into the pieces. A first solo show by a west Clare artist in a west Clare gallery is worth catching for that reason alone; the run covers all of September, so there is no rush.

Getting There

Culturlann Sweeney sits on O’Connell Street in the centre of Kilkee, a short walk from the horseshoe strand. Kilkee is on the N67 coastal route, about 15 minutes from Kilrush, an hour from Ennis by way of Kilrush, and roughly 25 minutes from the Killimer to Tarbert ferry for anyone coming north from Kerry. There is on-street parking along O’Connell Street and further parking near the seafront, and September is far easier for it than high summer. Bus Eireann runs daily services linking Ennis, Kilrush and Kilkee, with stops in the town centre a couple of minutes from the door.
