Le Cheile Choir Sing at Ennis Friary

What to Expect

Le Cheile Choir sings in Ennis Friary on Sunday 16 August 2026 from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. The choir is a community group made up of singers drawn from several County Clare choirs, and the programme mixes sacred and secular pieces. This is not a formal recital where the audience sits silent throughout: visitors are invited to listen and to sing along.

The setting does much of the work. Ennis Friary is a Franciscan house founded in the 13th century, and its stone nave and chancel give unaccompanied voices the kind of long, natural reverberation that no modern hall reproduces. The friary is an OPW heritage site in the centre of Ennis, with the McMahon tomb and the carved sculpture panels among the best surviving medieval stonework in the west of Ireland, so there is plenty to look at before and after the singing.

Seating inside the friary is limited, and the organisers note that it is offered on a first-come basis. Families are welcome. The performance runs for an hour, which makes it easy to fold into an afternoon in Ennis alongside the town’s other Heritage Week events at the same site that week.

Getting There

Ennis Friary is on Abbey Street in the centre of Ennis, a two-minute walk from O’Connell Square and the Market. There is no dedicated parking at the friary itself, but the Friar’s Walk, Market and Parnell Street car parks are all within a few minutes on foot. Ennis railway station and bus station sit together on Station Road, about a ten-minute walk away, with Irish Rail services from Limerick and Bus Eireann coaches from Limerick, Galway, Shannon Airport and West Clare. Drivers should exit the M18 at Ennis and follow signs for the town centre.
