It’s not what it SEAMS runs at the Edna O’Brien Library Gallery in Scariff from 14 September to 7 October 2026, with an opening reception on Saturday 19 September at 11:00 AM. Admission is free and the gallery is open 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Anita Nagy is a Hungarian-born surrealist and fantasy artist who has lived in Ennis since 2017. The paintings here are heavily textured acrylics full of flower motifs, worked so that the surface reads as embroidered cloth and lace rather than paint. The title is the joke and the point at once: nothing in the room is stitched, but it takes a second look to be sure. The show is made in memory of Nagy’s late mother, who was an embroidery artist, and it sets out to give that craft the standing of a fine art form. Nagy trained at the Budapest Drawing and Painting School and the London Art College, and has exhibited in Luxembourg, Milan, Venice and London.
The Edna O’Brien Library stands on the Mountshannon Road at the edge of Scariff village in east Clare, with parking at the building itself. Scariff is on the R352, about 15 minutes from Mountshannon and Tuamgraney, 40 minutes from Ennis by way of Tulla, and a similar run from Limerick through Killaloe on the R463. From the M7, come off at Birdhill or Nenagh and cross the Shannon at Killaloe. Bus services through east Clare are infrequent, so most visitors drive; the village centre with its shops and cafes is a few minutes’ walk from the library if you are making a morning of it.
