East Clare Love - Art Exhibition by Joe Culhane

What to Expect

East Clare Love is a solo exhibition of paintings by Joe Culhane at the Edna O’Brien Library Gallery in Scariff, open from 10 August to 12 September 2026. Clare Arts Office and the Edna O’Brien Library present it jointly, admission is free, and the gallery is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The paintings come out of Culhane’s work with the landscapes and natural world of east County Clare, the country around Scariff, Tuamgraney, Mountshannon and the Lough Derg shore. He works mainly in watercolour, having earlier made stretch fabric pieces based on sacred geometry, and describes himself as an eco-cosmic generalist, folding ecological and cosmic thinking into the same picture. The result is a set of works that read as landscape but carry more than topography. Because the gallery sits inside a working public library, the show can be seen on an ordinary weekday errand rather than as a separate trip, which is much of the point of the Clare Arts Office library gallery programme.

Getting There

The Edna O’Brien Library is on the Mountshannon Road on the edge of Scariff village in east Clare, with parking at the building. Scariff is on the R352, roughly 15 minutes from Tuamgraney and Mountshannon and about 40 minutes from Ennis by way of Tulla, or a similar run from Limerick city through Killaloe on the R463. Coming off the M7, leave at the Birdhill or Nenagh exits and cross to Killaloe and Ogonnelloe. Public transport into east Clare is limited, with a small number of daily bus services through Scariff village, so most visitors drive.
