Chronicles is written by Nicola Cassidy, an award-winning writer from County Louth, and is a special original commission by An Táin Arts Centre. The play is set in June 1947, when C.S. Lewis is at the height of his academic career and is suddenly summoned from Oxford to Drogheda, County Louth, where his brother Warnie lies dying. What follows is a week of discovery, of Ireland, of its people, and of memories of a life caught up in grief, responsibility and unwavering loyalty. As Lewis uncovers his own strengths and faults, the fragments of Narnia begin to emerge. An Táin Arts Centre describes the play as based on true events and an original take on the origin story of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
An Táin Arts Centre is an independent arts space supported by Louth County Council and The Arts Council, with a 350 seat main theatre, a 55 seat studio theatre and a visual arts gallery. It takes its own name from the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the legendary Cattle Raid of Cooley said to have taken place on the nearby Cooley Peninsula, and its year-round programme mixes local arts, national tours, workshops, exhibitions and in-house productions such as this one.
