Framing Cavan: 20 Years Behind the Lens by Lorraine Teevan

At Townhall Arts Centre · Townhall Street, Cavan, Co. Cavan

Framing Cavan photography exhibition by Lorraine Teevan at Townhall Arts Centre

Townhall Arts Centre’s gallery turns over to photography this November, with a 20-year retrospective from Cavan-based photographer Lorraine Teevan. Framing Cavan: 20 Years Behind the Lens draws on Teevan’s work across press and documentary photography, and runs free of charge for six weeks from early November into December.

What to expect

Teevan’s photography explores identity, community and lived experience, moving between public moments and more intimate portraits. Her approach is collaborative and empathetic rather than detached, and the images on show are chosen to reflect the resilience and character of rural life around the county over two decades of work. For anyone who has picked up The Anglo-Celt or a local parish newsletter over the years, some of these images may already be familiar, seen here together as a body of work rather than scattered across print runs. It is a quieter, more reflective show than a typical gallery opening, built for taking time over rather than a quick walk-through.

The exhibition is presented jointly by Cavan Arts and Townhall Arts Centre, continuing the venue’s pattern of pairing its autumn theatre and music programme with a free visual arts show in the gallery space alongside it.

Getting there

Townhall Arts Centre is on Townhall Street in the centre of Cavan town, within easy walking distance of Main Street and the town’s central car parks. Cavan town is roughly 90 minutes from Dublin via the N3, with Bus Éireann running regular coaches from Dublin Busáras.

While you’re in Cavan

The gallery sits in the middle of Cavan town, so a visit combines easily with lunch or a browse around the shops on Main Street. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
