At Townhall Arts Centre · Townhall Street, Cavan, Co. Cavan
Only the published dates are confirmed for this programme.
Cavan-based artist Ben Reilly brings a new body of sculpture and print work to the gallery at Townhall Arts Centre this autumn, opening on Culture Night and running for six weeks afterwards. Titled “Sometimes You Just Want To…”, the show grows out of Reilly’s usual working method: drawing, research and observation treated as practical tools, as hands-on as the cutting and shaping that follows. Presented jointly by Cavan Arts and Townhall Arts Centre, admission is free for the whole run.
Reilly’s process is one of constant adaptation, whether he is working in sculpture, drawing, print or film. Pieces get stuck together, cut, erased, scraped, refitted and reformed, sometimes repeatedly, before he considers them resolved. The exhibition carries the visible trace of that process rather than smoothing it away, so what is on show is as much about the making as the finished object. It suits anyone curious about how sculpture and print work actually gets built, layer by layer, rather than arriving fully formed.
The exhibition opens to the public on Friday 18 September as part of Culture Night, with an informal opening slot from 6:30pm to 8pm that evening. It then continues as a standard gallery show through to the end of October, so there is no need to catch it on opening night specifically.
Townhall Arts Centre is on Townhall Street in the centre of Cavan town, a short walk from Main Street and the town’s central car parks. Cavan town is about 90 minutes from Dublin via the N3, with regular Bus Éireann coaches running from Dublin Busáras.
Townhall Street sits right in the middle of Cavan town’s shops, cafes and pubs, so the gallery is easy to combine with a wander around the town centre before or after. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
