At Ramor Arts Centre · Virginia, Co. Cavan
Only the published dates are confirmed for this programme.
Ramor Arts Centre closes out its autumn programme with a change of scale entirely: paintings made on voyages to Antarctica by artist Daphne Levinge Shackleton, who lives and works from a studio near Mullagh, Co. Cavan. Antarctica… An Artist’s View opens on Friday 20 November and runs free of charge through to just before Christmas.
In 2025 and 2026, Levinge Shackleton travelled to and around Antarctica with her husband, historian Jonathan Shackleton, a cousin of the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, painting as she went. The resulting work covers the South Atlantic Ocean and the frozen landscape of icebergs, glaciers and wildlife she encountered, painted with an eye to the fragility of the continent as much as its scale. Levinge Shackleton’s background as a botanist and garden designer as well as an artist shows through in how closely observed the natural detail is.
The exhibition is paired with a talk: Jonathan Shackleton gives an illustrated lecture, “Antarctica… A Special Continent”, at Ramor Arts Centre on Thursday 3 December at 8pm (tickets €10), covering his own research trips and the history of early polar exploration, including his cousin’s expeditions. It is a natural follow-on for anyone taken with the paintings.
