What to Expect

The annual cemetery Mass at Mullawn, Tullow, takes place on Wednesday 19 August 2026 at 7.30pm. Mass is celebrated in the open air among the graves rather than in the parish church, and families gather at the plots of their own dead. It is one of the fixed points of the late summer in a Carlow parish, and the sort of evening where people who have long since moved away come back for an hour.

The parish newsletter records that volunteers have spent the weeks beforehand cutting the grass and tidying the grounds so the cemetery looks well for the occasion. Mullawn is the main burial ground serving Tullow, and the Mass includes prayers for everyone interred there. Bring a coat and, if walking is difficult, a folding chair, because there is no seating laid on and the ground is uneven in places.

• Regular parish Masses that week are unaffected. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament runs in Tullow Parish Church on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am to 6pm.

Getting There

Tullow sits about 15km east of Carlow town on the N81, which runs south from Dublin through Blessington and Baltinglass, and is also reached from Carlow town on the N80 and R725. Mullawn Cemetery is on the edge of the town. Parking at the cemetery gates is limited and fills quickly for the annual Mass, so allow extra time and expect to park along the approach road and walk in. Tullow town centre has free public parking within walking distance for anyone happy to make the short journey on foot. There is no rail service to Tullow; the nearest station is Carlow.
