What to Expect

Teach Dolmain on Tullow Street bills itself as the home of Carlow’s longest-running traditional music session, and Carlow Tourism carries it as a standing weekly fixture rather than an occasional pub night. Musicians gather from 9:30pm on Thursdays and play through to around 11:30pm, working sets of jigs, reels, hornpipes and slow airs. There is no stage, no compere and no ticket. Players take a corner of the bar, sit in a circle, and the night builds from whoever turns up with an instrument.

The pub takes its name from the Browneshill Dolmen a few kilometres outside the town, and the interior leans into that local heritage rather than a generic Irish-pub look. Anyone who plays is welcome to sit in, and listeners are just as welcome to take a stool at the bar and stay the night without joining. The session has held its Thursday slot straight through the autumn: the tourism calendar lists it every single week from mid-August into November, which makes it one of the most reliable live-music bets in the county on a midweek night.

Getting There

Teach Dolmain sits on Tullow Street in the middle of Carlow Town, roughly ten minutes on foot from Carlow railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line. Drivers can use the Shopping Centre and Potato Market car parks nearby, both a short walk from the door. Bus Eireann and JJ Kavanagh coaches from Dublin, Kilkenny and Waterford stop in the town centre, though the last departures leave well before the tunes finish.
