What to Expect

Lisgarvan House International is a four-day eventing fixture run on farmland at Lisgarvan House Stud, about two miles outside Ballon in County Carlow. It is one of the larger international horse trials on the Irish calendar and covers the full span of the sport, with eight classes listed for 2026: four star long and short, three star long and short, two star long and short, one star intro, and a two star young horse section for six and seven year olds. Eventing runs across three phases - dressage, showjumping and cross country - so the format spreads over the four days rather than concentrating everything into one afternoon.

The trials are run by the Corrigan family alongside their working farm, and the organisers describe the event as a celebration of community, country life and Irish hospitality rather than a purely sporting fixture. The 2025 edition drew riders from 14 nations, including Olympic competitors and leading Irish names, along with several thousand spectators. There is a trade village on site for the duration. Because the timetable is set by class and phase, and can shift with entry numbers, the organisers publish a day-by-day schedule closer to the event; check that before travelling if you want to catch a specific class or the cross country day.

Getting There

Lisgarvan House Stud is roughly two miles from the village of Ballon in central Carlow, and the organisers note that the site is reached off the M9 motorway. Ballon sits on the N80 between Carlow town and Bunclody, about 15km south-east of Carlow town. Carlow town is roughly an hour from Dublin on the M9 and 45 minutes from Kilkenny. This is a rural farm venue with field parking, so use the eircode R93 RH36 rather than the village name, and expect the approach roads to be slow at peak times on cross country day.
