JJ Kavanagh and Sons Carlow Intermediate Hurling Championship 2026

At McGrath Park · McGrath Park, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow

Intermediate club hurling match at McGrath Park, Bagenalstown

What to Expect

The JJ Kavanagh and Sons Intermediate Hurling Championship sits directly below the senior grade in Carlow, and it is played almost entirely on club pitches rather than at the county ground. That gives the grade a very different feel from senior hurling: small grounds, close-up viewing, and clubs from the hurling heartland along the Barrow and up towards the Wexford border competing for a promotion place that can change a club’s decade.

Five fixtures fall in this round. Bagenalstown Gaels open at home at McGrath Park on Wednesday 12 August 2026 at 7pm. Kildavin/Clonegal host Bagenalstown Gaels at Spellman Park on Saturday 15 August at 7.30pm. Sunday 16 August brings three games: Naomh Eoin v Mount Leinster Rangers in Myshall at 6pm, Carlow Town Hurling Club v Burren Rangers at the Carlow Town grounds at 6pm, and a second Naomh Eoin fixture at Spellman Park at 7.30pm. The clubs in the grade cover most of the county’s hurling map, from Carlow Town and Bagenalstown across to Myshall, Kilbride and the Kildavin/Clonegal end of the Slaney valley.

Getting There

McGrath Park is in Bagenalstown, also known as Muine Bheag, a town on the River Barrow about 15km south of Carlow town on the R705. Bagenalstown has its own railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line, which stops within walking distance of the town centre. Spellman Park is at Kildavin in the south-east of the county near the Wexford border, Myshall sits under the Blackstairs, and Carlow Town Hurling Club is in the county town itself. Apart from Bagenalstown and Carlow town, these grounds need a car, with parking on site.
