What to Expect

The Talbot Hotel Carlow Intermediate Football Championship is the county’s second tier of club gaelic football, sitting directly beneath the senior grade, and the winner goes up while the beaten finalists usually still have a promotion play-off to chase. Because the intermediate grade is where several ambitious village clubs cluster, the games are frequently tighter than the senior fixtures above them, and a single point can decide who makes the knockout stages.

Carlow GAA splits this round between two venues. Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow town takes Eire Og v Clonmore on Thursday 20 August at 7pm, Kildavin/Clonegal v St Patrick’s on Sunday 23 August at 5pm, and Eire Og v Tinryland on Tuesday 25 August at 7pm. Pitch 1 at the Netwatch Training Centre in Fenagh hosts Tinryland v Ballon on Friday 21 August at 7.30pm and Fighting Cocks v Ballinabranna on Saturday 22 August at 6pm. The clubs in the grade this year include Eire Og’s second team, Clonmore, Tinryland, Ballon, Fighting Cocks, Ballinabranna, Kildavin/Clonegal and St Patrick’s, spread from the Wicklow border across to the Barrow valley.

Getting There

Netwatch Cullen Park is on the southern edge of Carlow town, walkable from the town centre and from Carlow railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line. The Netwatch Training Centre is at Lumcloon, Fenagh, in the middle of the county roughly 15km south-east of Carlow town, reached on local roads off the R724 and R725 - it is a rural site, so satnav to R21 YY09 rather than the village name. Parking at both grounds is on site or on the road alongside, and neither is served directly by public transport in the evening.
