Nature and Folklore All Ages Table Quiz at An Gairdin Beo

At An Gairdin Beo · Old Dublin Road, Carlow, Co. Carlow, R93 E1HF

Teams answering questions at a table quiz in a community garden

What to Expect

An Gairdin Beo, the community garden on the Old Dublin Road in Carlow Town, runs a free all-ages table quiz on nature and folklore for National Heritage Week 2026. The quiz runs from 10:30am to 12:00pm on Thursday 20 August and is deliberately pitched so that children and adults answer from the same sheet: the questions cover native plants and wildlife alongside the folklore, cures and old sayings attached to them, which is territory where a grandparent often beats a botanist.

An Gairdin Beo is a volunteer-run community garden and biodiversity project rather than a hall, so the setting is part of the point. The garden works on food growing, native planting and community education through the year, and Heritage Week is one of the weeks it opens the gates for a public event. A table quiz is a low-cost way for a group like this to bring new people onto the site who might then come back as volunteers. Bringing a team is not necessary; teams form on the morning from whoever turns up.

Getting There

An Gairdin Beo is on the Old Dublin Road on the eastern side of Carlow Town, close to VISUAL and Carlow College and roughly ten to fifteen minutes on foot from Tullow Street. Carlow railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line is about a fifteen-minute walk. There is limited parking at the garden itself, so town-centre car parks and a short walk are the safer plan for drivers.
