Drummin Bog: It's Moths, It's Water

What to Expect

The Drummond Bog Project marks Water Heritage Day with a morning at Drummin Bog built around two things happening on the same site. Moths caught overnight in two traps are released at 8:00am, with expert help on hand to identify them using citizen science recording methods, so anyone who turns up can log what comes out rather than just watch.

At 11:30am hydrogeologist James Lalor presents five years of water level monitoring from the bog, covering how groundwater works, how the data is collected and what the readings say about the hydrological processes shaping the landscape. That combination, a species survey in the morning and the water science behind the habitat later, is the point of the day: the bog’s moths and its water table are the same story. A tea break at 10:30am gives latecomers a way in between the two halves.

• Meeting point and wet weather venue: Drummond Hall, Drummond, St Mullins, Co. Carlow.

• Wear long trousers, long sleeves and strong footwear. Bring a walking stick for rough ground and your own cup for the tea break.
• If the weather turns, the whole event moves indoors to Drummond Hall.

Getting There

Drummin Bog lies near St Mullins in the far south of County Carlow, close to the Kilkenny and Wexford borders, roughly 40km from Carlow Town and about 10km from Graiguenamanagh on the River Barrow. Drummond Hall is the meeting point and has parking. There is no useful public transport out here on a Sunday morning, so drive. The approach is via the R729 and local roads from Borris or Graiguenamanagh, and an early start means allowing extra time on narrow lanes.
