What to Expect

Carlow College hosts a free Heritage Week lecture on Catholic churches and chapels before and after Emancipation on Tuesday 18 August, running from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. The subject is one of the sharpest visible changes in the Irish landscape: the plain, often barn-shaped mass houses built under the constraints of the penal era, and the confident cut-stone churches with towers and spires that went up across the country in the decades after Catholic Emancipation in 1829. The difference in scale, siting and ambition tells you more about nineteenth-century Ireland than most written sources.

Carlow is a fitting venue for it. Carlow College, St Patrick’s, was founded in 1782 and is one of the oldest Catholic colleges in the country, and the Cathedral of the Assumption in the town was completed in 1833 under Bishop James Doyle, making it one of the earliest and most prominent post-Emancipation cathedrals in Ireland. The college sits on College Street next to Carlow County Museum, so the lecture takes place a few minutes from the buildings it describes. Admission is free.

Getting There

Carlow College, St Patrick’s, is on College Street in the centre of Carlow Town, beside Carlow County Museum and the Cathedral of the Assumption, and a short walk from Tullow Street and the Potato Market. Carlow railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line is about ten minutes on foot. Town-centre car parks are free from the early evening, which makes driving straightforward for a 7:00pm start.
