What to Expect

Carlow County Council holds its full plenary meeting at County Hall on the Athy Road, and the meetings it has published for 2026 have each fallen on the second Monday of the month. All eighteen elected members are entitled to attend. The business of the meeting runs to motions tabled by councillors, reports from the chief executive and the directors of service, roads and housing programmes, planning matters that fall to the elected members rather than to planners, and the votes that set council policy for the year.

Agendas are published ahead of each sitting on the council’s meetings page, and the minutes of the previous month go up after they are adopted. The 2026 record carries agendas and minutes running from January through to June, which is the easiest way to see the shape of a typical meeting before you attend one, and it is also the point at which the published record currently stops, so an autumn date should be checked there first. Alongside the county council itself, the three municipal districts of Carlow, Muinebheag and Tullow hold their own meetings and publish their own papers on the same page, and those tend to deal with the local roads, estates and amenity issues in each district.

Getting There

County Hall stands on the Athy Road, the R417 heading north out of Carlow town, on the town side of the junction with the Green Lane. It is roughly a fifteen minute walk from Tullow Street and the Potato Market, and there is parking on site. Carlow railway station, on the Dublin to Waterford line, is a short walk across town, and town bus and coach stops are on Barrack Street and Kennedy Avenue. Drivers from the M9 should take Junction 4 or 5 and follow signs for the town centre.
