Carlow Parish Pilgrimage to Our Lady's Island

At St Leo's College (departure point) · Dublin Road, Carlow, Co. Carlow

Pilgrims walking the causeway at a Marian shrine

What to Expect

Carlow Cathedral parish runs a one day bus pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Island in Co. Wexford on Tuesday 25 August 2026. The bus departs from St Leo’s at 11am and the cost is €25 per person, with booking taken in the Parish Centre.

Our Lady’s Island is one of the oldest continuously used Marian pilgrimage sites in Ireland, a low peninsula in a shallow lagoon near Carnsore Point where pilgrims have come since medieval times. The traditional devotion is to walk the perimeter of the island, praying the rosary as you go, some pilgrims doing part of the circuit barefoot or in the shallow water. The main pilgrimage season there runs from the Feast of the Assumption on 15 August to the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady on 8 September, which is why parishes across Leinster organise their buses in this window.

This is a full day out rather than a quick visit. Bring rain gear, comfortable shoes and something to eat and drink, as facilities on the island itself are modest.
