What to Expect

Borris Active Retirement meets every Monday afternoon in Borris Library from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. New members are always welcome, from 55 years upwards, and the group makes a point of saying so in the parish news every week.

The pitch from the organisers is straightforward: a chance to get out of the house for an hour or two, to meet people and to have a chat, and they note that it matters more as the long evenings draw in. Active retirement groups across Ireland run on that logic, and they tend to build out from tea and conversation into outings, talks, card games and short trips once a core membership forms.

Meeting in the library rather than a hall is a practical arrangement. It is warm, central, free, and the branch is part of the My Open Library scheme, so the building is accessible from 8am to 10pm seven days a week for members who register.

• Other regular Borris activities include Accent Dance School adult beginners classes in Borris Town Hall every Thursday at 6.30pm.

Getting There

Borris sits in south Co. Carlow on the R702, roughly 25km south of Carlow town and about 10km east of the M9 at junction 8 for Paulstown. From Carlow take the R705 through Leighlinbridge and Bagenalstown, then the R702 into the village. From Kilkenny and the south, the R702 runs east from Graiguenamanagh. The library is in the village, within easy walking distance of the main street, and there is on-street parking nearby. There is no rail service to Borris; the nearest station is Muine Bheag, about 12km away on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line.
