What to Expect

Jackie Mitchell shows a body of acrylic and oil paintings on maritime subjects at The Raven’s Nest Gallery, part of The Makers House overlooking Wexford Harbour. The work covers traditional harbours, wooden boats and coastal reflections, moving between realism and looser, more expressive handling. Mitchell describes the sea as a constant that has shaped her art visually and emotionally.

There is a second strand to the show. Alongside the paintings, Mitchell has assembled a vintage photographic collection documenting her late father’s life at sea, presented as an exhibition within an exhibition and prompted by the harbour views from the gallery windows. That pairing of new painting with family photographic archive gives the show a documentary edge that a straight seascape exhibition would not have. The exhibition opened on 1 August with Jennifer Whitmore TD speaking at the launch, and runs to 23 August.

Getting There

The Raven’s Nest Gallery is part of The Makers House in Wexford town, overlooking the harbour, within walking distance of the quayfront and Main Street. Irish Rail runs from Dublin Connolly to O’Hanrahan Station on the quay in around two hours, and Bus Eireann and Wexford Bus coaches stop in the town centre. The quayfront car parks are the closest option, and the walk along the harbour front is short.
