At Banagher Outdoor Swimming Pool · Shannon Bank Park, Banagher, Co. Offaly
Offaly Sports Partnership and Swim Ireland are running a summer series of open water swimming sessions at Banagher’s outdoor pool, with qualified coaches and lifeguards on hand every Tuesday evening in August 2026. The sessions use Banagher’s floating 25 metre pool on the River Shannon, giving swimmers a supported, safe setting to swim in open water rather than a conventional indoor pool.
Sessions run on Tuesday evenings in August, on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, with Swim Ireland coaches and trained lifeguards supervising throughout. The pool is a 25 metre floating structure moored on the Shannon as part of a wider redevelopment of the town’s riverside amenities. The programme is aimed at building confidence in open water for swimmers used to indoor pools, as well as giving more experienced swimmers a supervised stretch of river to train in. Outside of organised sessions, the pool is open for free public use, and it has quickly become one of the few purpose-built open water swimming amenities of its kind in the midlands.
The pool is at Shannon Bank Park in Banagher, close to the town’s harbour and a short walk from Main Street. Banagher sits on the N52 and R356, on the Offaly side of the Shannon crossing into Co. Galway.
Banagher’s harbour and riverside walks make a natural pairing with a swim session, with cafes and pubs on Main Street just a few minutes from the pool on foot. There is more to see in Banagher and across Co. Offaly.
