What to Expect

The Backstage and Breakfast Tour runs on two mornings during Wexford Festival Opera, Thursday 22 October and Thursday 29 October, both starting at 9:00 AM. It is a guided walk through the parts of Ireland’s National Opera House that audiences do not normally see: the backstage corridors, the wings, and the stage itself, with an explanation of how the building prepares for a run of performances.

The tour finishes with breakfast at La Vista Café and Restaurant on the top floor of the opera house, where the spread includes coffee and quiche and the windows look out across Wexford town and the harbour. Running it at 9:00 AM during festival fortnight means you see the house between performances, when the crews are working rather than the stage sitting idle. At the time of writing the 22 October tour was available to book and the 29 October date had sold out.

Getting There

The National Opera House is on High Street in the centre of Wexford town, a short climb from the quay front. Drive in on the N11 from Dublin and Gorey or the N25 from New Ross and Rosslare Europort. Wexford O’Hanrahan railway station, on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line, is roughly ten minutes’ walk. A 9:00 AM start lands in town centre commuter traffic, so allow extra time and use the quay front car parks rather than looking for on-street parking.
